Altec Lansing M812

August 30th, 2008

Altec Lansing joins the wireless iPod dock fray with the M812, an elegant music system consisting of one wireless stereo speaker, a remote, and a dock for $399.95. The system is also sold with two speakers and two remotes for $699.95. You can expand up to eight units, with each additional speaker adding $299.95 to the total price tag—a considerable investment. In fact, it seems overly expensive to me, especially since the speakers distort at higher volumes.

The basic M812 package consists of an iPod dock/transmitter (1.2 by 4.7 by 5.2 inches, HWD), the large but slick-looking wireless speaker (10 by 17.9 by 4.5 inches), and a remote control, which runs on two (included) AAA batteries. You also get an FM wire antenna, which connects to the back of the transmitter dock, as well as a 3.5mm cable for connecting outside sources—like another MP3 player—via the dock’s aux input on the rear panel. The dock’s power is provided by the included 9-volt adapter. Various plastic inserts ensure that your particular iPod model will sit firmly in the dock.

Westinghouse intros LCD HDTV with built-in DVD player

August 30th, 2008

Westinghouse on Thursday broke some new ground with its VK40F580D HDTV, the first from the company to feature a built-in DVD player. Unlike most such combos, the DVDs slide in via a front-mounted drive, and not on a side-mounted and reportedly harder-to-reach slot. The 40-inch LCD HDTV delivers 1080p resolution via its two HDMI inputs, and also sports a USB port for connecting portable or flash memory drives, digital cameras or digital audio players, among other compatible devices.

The built-in DVD player in question will upconvert standard definition movies to 1080p and automatically turn on the TV and set the proper input once it detects a DVD is being inserted. Westinghouse has also included an ATSC/ClearQAM tuner for HD broadcasts but has declined to immediately reveal contrast ratios and other image quality details.
The VK-40F580D is shipping now and sells for about $1,049.

Bangin’ Music Parties Coming to a Spot Near You

August 29th, 2008

image

The PodSpot is one large industrial sized speaker system designed for your wee iPod - or any other Mp3 player for that matter. It’s splash proof and designed to be rugged enough for outdoor events. Surprisingly it’s battery powered pushing a multitude of tweeters, horns and two 10″ subwoofers good enough for 24 hours. If the 115 db don’t attract enough attention, I’m sure the sight of 50 people dancing their asses off will.

HP Compaq Presario SR5610F

August 29th, 2008

The HP Compaq Presario SR5610F is part of the HP’s Compaq Presario SR line of budget-price PCs. Like most SR models, the SR5610F is a no-frills model that costs less than $500. Its capable handling of basic daily computing tasks (Web browsing, archiving CDs, e-mailing, standard office productivity) can make for a decent student PC or second home computer. But at this low price point, where bang-for-the-buck is king and competition is fierce, HP doesn’t give you quite enough—or at least not as much as similarly priced offerings from Lenovo, Dell, and eMachines.Aesthetically, the Presario SR5610F remains unchanged from last year’s SR5130NX model. The brushed silver case with black trimming bears the traditional Compaq branding, as do the mouse and keyboard. The black keyboard bundled with the system is standard fare, but the included ball mouse is dated. It baffles me as to why HP would insist on placing such ancient technology in even a budget PC; an optical mouse costs just a few extra bucks. (To be fair, a recent budget eMachines PC that made its way to the Labs came with the dreaded ball mouse, too.)

Sinar announces - in a somewhat peculiar manner at The Luminous-Landscape forum - a new medium format integrated camera system and a camera with a digital back. Thierry Hagenauer from Sinar AG Switzerland has posted here the specifications of the Sinar Hy6-65, the Sinar Hy6-s65r, and the Sinarback eSprit 65. Sinar does not (yet?) enter into the recently announced 50+ megapixel class of MF systems, as the new Sinar camera system is fitted with the 31 megapixel Kodak KAF31600CE CCD sensor. The systems will be on show at Photokina 2008…

Mobile phone charger pen

August 29th, 2008

image

One of the most annoying things that can happen when you’re out and about is to run out of phone battery, and there’s very rarely a plug socket around you can hook your charger up to.
It is these times that this little gadget was created for. It might look like a pen, but actually, open it up, pop one AA battery in and it becomes a portable charger that can charge your phone for up to 100 minutes - no mains power required.
That will give you around 20 hours of standby time or two hours of talk time, depending on your handset.
It comes with five different adapters for various mobile phones, such as Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. And the finishing touch? Put the pen back together, and it actually works as a pen. Marvellous - how very James Bond.
