The 8.1-megapixel Casio Exilim EX-Z9 surprised me. In my experience, Casio’s point-and-shoot cameras have suffered from poor image quality. My opinion was reinforced most recently by the EX-S880, a slim and sleek camera that took dull and dark pictures. I was expecting more of the same from the $150 (street) EX-Z9, but much to my delight, picture quality was improved. The new model has a decent feature set, including easy YouTube video uploads, an innovative interface, a 2.6-inch LCD, 3X optical zoom, and 23 Best Shot modes. Combine that with a few stylistic options—it’s available in four colors (pink, black, silver, and orange)—and the EX-Z9 stands out.

The EX-Z9 couples an 8 megapixel CCD imager to a 3X optical zoom and a 2.6-inch LCD. To keep things simple, the Casio EXZ9 offers 23 Best Shot modes, an Easy mode, and includes face detection technology. The ‘Z9 also includes Casio’s YouTube capture mode, making it easy to record and upload your very own YouTube videos. The EXILIM EX-Z9 stores its images and videos on SD/SDHC cards, or in 18.6MB of internal memory. The Casio EX-Z9 derives its power from a proprietary Lithium-ion battery, and both battery and charger are included in the kit.
