The Stylus 1030SW, Olympus’ semi-indestructible 10.1MP point-and-shoot, is designed for fairly extreme conditions. Olympus claims the camera is shockproof (to 2 meters), waterproof (to 10 meters), freezeproof (to 14°F), and crushproof (to 220 lbs.) We’ve seen other cameras with features like this, but it’s rare that they’re all combined into one.

Olympus’ designers had some good ideas when they put the Stylus 1030SW together. Dedicated external controls and a Function Menu make it easy to adjust settings without going into the 1030SW’s menu system. The four-way controller on the back of the camera can be used to set Exposure Compensation, Flash, the Self-Timer, and Macro. Nestled into the four corners of the controller are the Menu, Playback/Direct Print, Shadow Adjustment On/Off, and Display/Menu Guide/LED Illuminator buttons. The Function Menu provides access to White Balance, ISO, Single/Continuous shooting modes, Metering, file size, and compression options.

The Olympus Stylus 1030SW probably won’t be the first choice for serious SCUBA divers, but it is more than practical enough for the adventurous traveler or water enthusiast. The Olympus Stylus 1030SW is waterproof down to 33 feet. One thing novice SCUBA divers will appreciate about the Olympus Stylus 1030SW is the built in Manometer which logs depth with the picture meta information.

The Olympus 1030SW has a contrast detection system that focuses from 19.7 inches to infinity normally. Autofocus modes are in the Recording menu and include Face Detect, ESP, and Spot. The Spot mode is the fastest, while the Face Detect is the slowest. The face detection system can recognize three faces but doesn’t track them well. I watched the green bracket frame a face on the LCD, but when the man leaned forward slightly, the bracket disappeared. This technology is behind the curve when other manufacturers are offering more faces (Canon recognizes 35 at a time) at more angles (Fujifilm can track 360 degrees).

Even more durable than its predecessors – it can withstand a drop from 6.6 feet – the camera has also been pumped up with a 3.6x wide optical zoom (28-102mm equivalent in 35mm photography, f3.5-5.0), 2.7- inch HyperCrystal II LCD screen and digital imaging advances, including Face Detection, Shadow Adjustment Technology, and a TruePicTM III Image Processor to capture rich, vibrant detail with every shot. In addition, it features a crushproof body that can withstand up to 220 pounds of crushing pressure.
